Celebrating Community and Connection: What the CIPD Has Meant to Me as a New Entrepreneur

Starting my own business is one of the most rewarding – and challenging – decisions I’ve ever made. Like many new entrepreneurs, I’ve experienced the full rollercoaster of emotions: excitement, uncertainty, freedom, self-doubt, and pride. But one thing has made a significant difference to my journey so far: the support, encouragement, and collaboration I’ve found through the CIPD Hereford & Worcestershire Branch.

Joining the committee wasn’t something I’d planned when I first launched my business, but it’s become a hugely valuable part of my professional life. It all started with a visit to the CIPD Independents group, where I was warmly welcomed. From the start, there was a genuine sense of collaboration over competition — a refreshing and empowering change from what you sometimes expect when entering a new environment with people in the same sphere of business.

Through that first session, I met fellow consultants and people professionals who weren’t just open to sharing experiences but were also happy to support each other’s work. I’ve even had the opportunity to collaborate with others on client projects — something that’s added both value and confidence to the early years of Ambition HR.

Interestingly, during my years in direct employment, I rarely attended CIPD-led sessions. It wasn’t a lack of interest or value, but more a case of priorities competing for time (sound familiar?). Looking back, I realise how much I would have benefited from connecting with peers sooner — but thankfully, I’ve found that connection now, and it’s made all the difference.

Being part of the committee has given me:

  • A sense of belonging in the wider People Profession

  • A network of like-minded professionals who understand the highs and lows of the work we do

  • A chance to learn and grow through insightful, relevant events

  • And importantly, the opportunity to give back, offering support and encouragement to others

There’s something about coming together with other HR professionals that feels really special to me. They get it: the real-life challenges of delivering change, supporting others, staying resilient, and always striving for better. It’s not just professional development; it’s a shared understanding and collective motivation.

Join an event. Reach out to a local member. You might be surprised how valuable the relationships can be.

Two recent sessions have really stood out for me, full of energy, insight and ideas. First was a brilliant session by local lawyer, Lisa Kemp, who shared hints and tips on facing an Employment Tribunal. Second was a relaxed evening event focused on supporting wellbeing in the people profession, with amazing speakers including Chris Hopkirk – Founder of The Business of Mindfulness, Sarah Venables, Founder of The HR Confidence Club and author Alan Muskett, whose book The Burnout Ladder offers real-life insight into spotting and tackling burnout.

So to anyone else at the start of their new business journey this World Entrepreneur’s Day: remember, you don’t have to go it alone. Find your people - I found mine through the CIPD.
